The person at the bench

I draw it, make it and fit it

MP Gates and Handrails is a workshop in Brierley Hill, and I am the person who runs it. I design the gates, handrails and railings, cut and weld them from mild steel and wrought iron, paint them and fit them myself. Most customers are homeowners with a drive, a set of steps or a boundary that deserves something better than an off-the-shelf panel. Some are businesses that need protection fitted to a unit or a frontage.

I like work that has to be right: a gate that closes cleanly, a rail that feels solid under your hand, a run of railings that follows the ground without gaps. That comes from measuring on site, drawing before cutting and finishing the job myself, so the person you spoke to on the phone is the person who turns up to fit it.

If your idea will not work, I will say so and explain why. If restoring what you have is better than replacing it, I will say that too. Either way you get a free no-obligation quote, and you decide in your own time.

How a gate gets made

Five stops along one scribe line

  1. 01 Survey

I look at the opening, the posts or walls, the fall of the ground and how you use the space.

  2. 02 Drawing

You see the design, with bar spacing, finials and colour, before any steel is cut.

  3. 03 Cutting

Steel is cut to the drawing in the workshop, with every length checked against the opening.

  4. 04 Welding

Joints are welded, ground back and finished by hand, then painted in the colour you chose.

  5. 05 Fitting

I fit it on site, hang it, set the latch and check everything moves as it should.

Questions

About the workshop

Who is Matthew?

Matthew is the maker behind MP Gates and Handrails. He designs, makes and fits the gates, handrails, railings and security products from his workshop unit in Brierley Hill. When you call or message, you speak to the person who will draw, build and fit your job.

Why does it matter that one person designs, makes and fits?

It cuts out hand-offs. The person who measures your opening is the person who builds the gate, so details do not get lost between a surveyor, a workshop and an installer. If something needs adjusting on the day, it is fixed on the spot.

What is the process from first call to fitting?

First a conversation and photos, then a visit to measure if needed. Next I draw the design for you to approve. After that I cut, weld and finish in the workshop, then fit it on site and check everything works. Each step is explained as we go.

Where is the workshop?

At Unit 20, Canalside Industrial Estate, Wedgbury Way, Brierley Hill, DY5 3JU. It is a working unit, not a showroom, so please call before you visit. A map link is on the contact page and in the footer of every page.

What materials do you use?

I work with mild steel and wrought iron. These suit gates, handrails, railings and security products, and they take paint well in whatever colour you choose. If you have a particular material in mind, mention it and I will explain whether it is suitable for the job.

What do customers say about the work?

Our Google Business Profile has 5 stars across 35 Google reviews, and you can read them yourself through the link on this site. One customer in Dudley described a pair of 8ft driveway gates as practical and gorgeous, and finished on time to a very high standard.

Do you work for homes and businesses?

Both. Most homeowners come for driveway gates, handrails and railings. Businesses come for security products such as anti-ram posts, shutter door bars, window grilles and bollards. The approach is the same: measure, draw, make and fit, with a quote first.

Will you give me a straight answer if my idea will not work?

Yes. If a design will not suit your opening, or restoration is not worth it, I tell you and explain why. I would rather you hear that before you commit than discover it on the day. Honest advice is part of every quote.

Can I see examples of your work before I get in touch?

Yes. The gallery shows real jobs grouped by type: driveway gates, side gates, handrails, railings and internal steel. It is the quickest way to see what I make and what you might like. Any photo can be a starting point for your own design.

How do I start a project with you?

Call 07591 961 805, message on WhatsApp, or use the quote form on the contact page with a photo of the area. I will talk it through with you, arrange a visit if one is needed, and give you a free no-obligation quote.
