How a gate gets made

Marked out, cut, welded and fitted by the same person.

I draw it for your opening, make it in the workshop and hang it myself. Every gate starts as a line on a plate.

A note from the bench

One person owns the whole job

I am Matthew. I design, make and fit every gate, handrail and railing that leaves this workshop. When you ring, you speak to the person who will draw your job, cut the steel, weld it and hang it on your drive. Small details like where a post lands or how a latch sits are easier to get right when one person owns the whole job.

  • Mild steel and wrought iron, made in Brierley Hill, in the West Midlands.
  • Designed, made and fitted by one person, so nothing is lost between hands.
  • A working workshop unit, not a showroom. Visits are by arrangement.

“Matthew designed and made for us a pair of stunning 8ft driveway gates that are both practical and gorgeous. The work was finished on time and to a very high standard.”

Work area

Gates and handrails across the West Midlands

The workshop is in Brierley Hill. These are the towns I work in. None has its own page yet, so tell me where you are when you get in touch.

Brierley Hill

The workshop is at Canalside Industrial Estate in Brierley Hill, so this is the nearest patch to the bench. A quick visit to check a measurement or a colour is easy to arrange, and there is no long journey between the drawing, the making and the fitting. Driveway gates and front railings here are often hung from existing brick piers and walls.

Dudley

Dudley homes range from older terraces with tight frontages to wider drives on later estates, and that changes how a gate is hung and how far it opens. I measure the opening, check the ground and draw the gate to suit. The testimonial on this site comes from a customer in Dudley who had a pair of 8ft driveway gates made.

Stourbridge

Stourbridge has plenty of larger houses with long frontages, front steps and boundary walls, which suits railings, side gates and handrails as much as driveway gates. I design the set together so posts, bar spacing and colour match across the frontage, rather than treating each piece as a separate job.

Railings and fencing in the gallery

Halesowen

Many Halesowen front gardens sit above the road or on sloping plots, which makes railings and handrails a natural fit: boundary runs, rails for steps up to the front door and wall-top panels. Falls in the ground change how each panel is built, so I measure the slope carefully and make the run to follow it.

Handrails in the gallery

Kingswinford

Where older ironwork has weathered on a Kingswinford drive or boundary, restoration is a good fit: sound gates and railings can be cleaned back, repaired and repainted in the colour you choose. If yours is beyond saving, I can make new ones to match the old pattern.

How gate restoration works

Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton covers homes and business premises alike. For homeowners I make driveway gates and railings. For businesses I fabricate anti-ram posts, shutter door bars, window grilles and bollards, agreed on a drawing before work starts. Tell me what you need to protect and I will propose a layout.

Commercial and security products

Birmingham

Plenty of Birmingham homeowners look for driveway gates, so it is worth saying plainly that I make each one to order and fit it myself. Send photos of your drive and the style you like, and I will draw a gate for your opening. Visits are arranged around the journey from the workshop.

Questions

Common questions

Quick answers about quotes, areas and how a job runs. If yours is not here, ring or message me.

Who actually makes and fits the gates and handrails?

Matthew designs, makes and fits every job himself from Unit 20, Canalside Industrial Estate in Brierley Hill. You deal with one person from the first phone call to the final fitting, so nothing gets lost between a salesperson, a workshop and an installer.

What kinds of metalwork do you make?

I make bespoke driveway gates, handrails, railings and fencing, plus restoration of existing gates, handrails and railings. For businesses I also fabricate anti-ram posts, shutter door bars, window grilles and bollards. Everything is made to order from mild steel and wrought iron, not taken from stock.

Which towns do you work in?

I work across Brierley Hill, Dudley, Stourbridge, Halesowen, Kingswinford, Cradley Heath, Wordsley, Quarry Bank, Sedgley, Tipton, Oldbury, Smethwick, West Bromwich, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Kidderminster, Bromsgrove, Solihull and Birmingham. If you are close to those but not listed, call and ask, and I will tell you honestly whether I can help.

How much does a bespoke gate cost?

It depends on the size, the design and the finish, so I quote each job individually instead of quoting a standard price. A free no-obligation quote after a few photos or a short visit gives you a clear figure before you commit to anything.

How do I ask for a quote?

Ring 07591 961 805, message me on WhatsApp, or use the quote form with a photo of your drive, steps or railings. Rough measurements help but are not essential. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, and I will explain anything that is unclear.

Are your gates made to order or bought in?

Every gate and handrail I supply is made to order in my workshop, shaped to the opening it will sit in. I do not sell catalogue ranges. That is why I measure carefully, draw the design for you to approve and only then start cutting steel.

Can you restore what I already have instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the steel is sound, gates, handrails and railings can usually be repaired, cleaned back and repainted. I will tell you honestly when replacement is the better route. Send photos of the worst areas and I will give you a clear answer with the quote.

Can I visit your workshop?

Unit 20 is a working workshop, not a showroom, so please call or message first. That way I can be there, show you work in progress and talk through your project properly. The gallery on this site shows finished jobs if you want to see examples first.

Do you take on commercial and security work?

Yes. I fabricate anti-ram posts, anti-ram shutter door bars, window grilles and bollards for business premises, and I fit them on site. The security section of the services page explains what I need from you. Tell me about the building and I will propose a layout.

What happens after I send my enquiry?

I look at your photos or details and get back to you to talk it through. If it needs a visit, I measure on site. You then get a free written quote and, for new work, a drawing to approve before anything is cut. There is no obligation at any stage.
